Politiken: Golovchenko about Facebook’s battle against election interference

On 2 August 2018, Ph.D. Yevgeniy Golovchenko was interviewed in the news outlet Politiken about digital security and the responsibility of the tech giants to prevent foreign states from meddling in other sates' national elections.

Facebook and Google are implementing control mechanisms in the U.S. and Ireland to hinder election interference. These include blocking ads paid from foreign countries and increasing transparency about the political ads by building public databases on who pays the ads. The same mechanisms however, have not yet been implemented in Scandinavia.

According to Golovchenko, this is unfortunate. The verification of ads is a step in the right direction as it does make it a bit more complicated for outsiders to interfere and the database on who are behind the various political ads is important for researchers and journalists to investigate what is going on online.

Further, Golovchenko welcomed political pressure on Facebook and Google to implement the same control mechanisms in Denmark and EU, as the tech giants will not take such steps without being forced by significant public pressure.
